Baby Sling Carrier
1/10

ASPYRE PICKS  /  0 TO 36 MONTHS

The carrier you will actually have on you

One shoulder, one buckle, about ten seconds. It folds to the size of a jumper and lives in the nappy bag or the car door, which is the whole point. The good carrier is no use in a cupboard upstairs.

On in roughly ten seconds, one handed, while you are already holding them

Folds small enough to stay in the bag permanently, so it is never the thing you forgot

Slides between wearers without re-threading, so it works for both of you

For awake, supervised carrying. Keep your baby's face visible and their chin off their chest at all times. Not for use in a vehicle, while cooking, running or cycling, and not a sleep surface.

WHY THIS ONE

Carriers do not get abandoned because they are uncomfortable. They get abandoned for three much smaller reasons.

01

The first go went badly

It was a car park, the baby was crying, the strap would not sit right and someone was waiting. Almost nobody attempts a second fitting after that. Difficulty on day one, not discomfort on day thirty, is what ends most carriers.

02

It was never where you were

Anything that needs two hands and a flat surface to put on ends up staying at home. Meanwhile the carries you actually need are ten minutes long and start in a shop aisle, a queue, or halfway down a hallway.

03

It was bought for the wrong hour

People choose a carrier imagining a long walk somewhere scenic. Very few of those walks happen. What happens instead is five to seven pm, every single day, for months, with dinner to make.

The trial everyone quotes on carrying did not test a carrier at all.

Parents were simply asked to hold their babies more, roughly two extra hours a day, upset or not. At six weeks those babies cried 43 percent less than the control group, and 51 percent less in the evenings. The variable was hours of contact. Not straps, not lumbar panels, not price.

So the feature that decides whether you ever get that effect is availability. Which is what this is built for, and honestly all it is built for.

THE PART EVERYONE WORRIES ABOUT

Ten seconds, start to finish

Nothing to thread, wrap or tie, and no tutorial to watch beforehand. This matters more than it sounds: the speed is what makes the difference between a carrier you use for the short carries and a carrier you only use when you planned ahead.

0s

Strap over your shoulder

Across the body, sitting on whichever shoulder you prefer. You can do this before you pick them up, or with them already on your hip.

3s

Buckle clicks at your side

One side release clip, at your ribs where you can see it and reach it. Listen for it to seat fully rather than half catching.

6s

Baby in, knees swept wide

Lower them in facing you, then sweep the fabric out so it reaches the back of each knee with their bottom sitting lower than their knees.

10s

One pull and you are done

Pull the tail of the strap to bring them high and snug against your chest. Then run the five checks below before you take a step.

EVERY TIME, NOT JUST THE FIRST TIME

Five things to check before you walk

Ten seconds to fit, five seconds to check. Do this every single time, including the fitting where you are certain it is fine, because the fit that slips is always the one nobody looked at.

High enough to kiss

Tip your head forward. If you can reach the top of their head with your lips, the height is right. If you cannot, tighten the strap.

Two fingers under the chin

A curled chin narrows a young airway, and a baby under four months cannot lift their own head to fix it. Leave two adult fingers of clearance.

Face turned out and visible

Cheek against you, nose and mouth clear of fabric. Nothing draped over the top, even to help them sleep. Check by looking, not by feel.

Fabric knee to knee

Spread across the thighs to the back of both knees, bottom lower than the knees. This is the seated position hip specialists recommend over legs hanging straight down.

Buckle at your side

Where you can see it and reach it, not behind your back. Check it is fully seated, and check the webbing for fraying while you are there.

Read this before first use. For awake, supervised carrying only. Never in a vehicle, on a bike, while running, or near heat or cooking. Not a sleep surface. If your baby was born premature, is low birth weight, or has a cold or any difficulty breathing, speak to your health provider before using any carrier.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Frequently asked questions

One shoulder. Is it going to hurt my back?

Over a long carry, more than a two shoulder carrier would, and we are not going to talk around that. Wearing it high and tight rather than low and loose makes a large difference, as does swapping shoulders between carries. If you are routinely carrying for more than about twenty minutes, or your child is at the heavier end, a structured carrier is the better tool for those trips and we would rather you used one.

I had a caesarean. Can I use it?

Check with your own provider first, since recovery varies a lot. The concern is pressure across the scar, so an upright front carry with the baby high on your chest and the weight taken through your shoulder tends to be tolerated earlier than a low or hip carry. Stop immediately if anything pulls at the scar. Plenty of parents wait until around six weeks and there is no advantage in rushing.

Can I use it with a newborn?

Yes, with real conditions. Newborns have almost no head control and cannot clear their own airway if their chin drops onto their chest, which makes the first months the period where fit matters most and mistakes cost the most. Upright, high, head turned to one side, face never against fabric, checked by sight every few minutes. If your baby was premature, low birth weight, or unwell, speak to your health provider before using any carrier at all.

Will it affect my baby's hips?

Position is what decides it. Hip specialists recommend carrying that supports the thigh from hip to knee with the knees higher than the bottom, rather than legs dangling straight down. Point four above is how you get that: sweep the fabric out to the backs of the knees instead of letting it bunch underneath. If your baby has been treated for hip dysplasia or is in a harness, check with your specialist first.

Will it fit both of us?

That is the strongest thing about a single adjustable strap. It moves between two people of quite different heights and builds with one pull and nothing to re-thread, which is why it tends to get used by the parent who never bothered with the structured one.

Does it get hot?

Any carrier does, because you are holding a small warm body against your chest. Two layers of fabric plus a baby is warmer than either alone, so dress them one layer lighter than you otherwise would and count the carrier as a layer. If their back is damp when you take them out, that is your signal to shorten the next carry rather than to buy a different carrier.

What if my baby hates it?

Some do at first, and it is nearly always one of three things: worn too low, put on during a meltdown rather than before one, or tried while you stand still. Babies settle to motion, so start walking straight away instead of waiting for them to calm down. Give it three or four short attempts on good days before you decide.

Shipping and How do I wash it, and when should I retire it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry flat. No dryer, no bleach, no fabric softener, all of which weaken webbing over time. Before each use run the strap through your fingers checking for fraying and make sure the buckle clicks fully home. If either has gone, retire it rather than repairing it.
